Dutch Delft blue and white 'month' plate, late 18th century, decorated with a Dutch interior of a family seated around a table, with the inscription 'February' within a cartouche above, with the mark of 'De Porceleyne Byl' (active 1657 - 1803) to reverse, diameter: 8 15/16in., 22.7cm; condition: very shallow chip and fritting to rim. This plate belongs to a series of twelve that shows the passing of the seasons. Various prints depicting the months of the year were used as inspiration for Dutch month dishes, e.g.: by Pieter Brueghel the Elder (circa 1525-1569), David Vinckboons (1576-1632) and Hans Bol (1534-1593). A similar plate can be found in the Philadelphia Museum of Art Collection, Accession number: 1921-3-32. SOLD
