Chinese Canton famille rose 'European subject' oval dish, Jiaqing Period (1796-1820), decorated in the centre with the Emperor Qianlong giving audience to three European figures, possibly the delegation of Earl Macartney (Governor of Madras and Ambassador to China from 1792-2) in a garden pavilion setting, the border with sprays of flowers and fruits with butterflies, diameter: 15 5/8in., 39.7cm; condition: some wear to gilding. Provenance: from the Collection of John Newall Esq. Previously sold at Sotheby's London, 16 February 1971, lot. 166.
