Chinese Canton famille rose 'European subject' oval dish, Jiaqing Period (1796-1820), decorated in the centre with the Emperor Qianlong giving audience to three European figures, possibly the delegation of Earl Macartney (Governor of Madras and Ambassador to China from 1792-2) in a garden pavilion setting, the border with sprays of flowers and fruits with butterflies, diameter: 15 5/8in., 39.7cm; condition: some wear to gilding. Provenance: from the Collection of John Newall Esq. Previously sold at Sotheby's London, 16 February 1971, lot. 166. The dish is illustrated in Battie, David (ed.), Sotheby's Concise Encyclopaedia of Porcelain (Conran Octopus Ltd., 1990), p. 65. SOLD
