Small Chinese porcelain English-decorated bowl, early 18th century, originally decorated with underglaze-blue sprays of peony, later enamelled with flowers and a standing pheasant, diameter: 4 1/2 in., 11.4cm; Provenance: the Helen Espir Collection. An author on and collector of Chinese ceramics, Helen Espir was assistant Hon Secretary of the Oriental Ceramic Society 1984-1990 and was responsible for starting the Chinese Scholars’ Fund. A number of ceramics from her collection were given to the British Museum.
