Pair of Japanese polychrome Dutch decorated apothecary bottles, 17th century, decorated in underglaze blue with the initials 'D.C.L.' within a laurel wreath with tassels, with long-tailed birds and insects among flowering shrubs issuing from rockwork with a banded bamboo-hedge, the neck with lappets containing flower sprays alternating with lancet leaves, height: 10in., 25.5cm. Provenance: from the collection of the descendants of Count Louis de Gontaut-Biron (1747-93).Large quantities of white-glazed apothecary bottles were imported from Japan and later decorated in Delft. This pair belong to a small number of bottles with initials in underglaze blue that were ordered by VOC officials in Batavia.
