Small Italian Montelupo maiolica armorial drug pot, 1500-1520, of ovoid form with two strap handles, decorated with Persian palmettes and inscribed with the label 'Pll.Cotie' (Pillole ?Cotyledon major: Pennywort pills) within a scroll below the coat of arms of the Aldobrandini di Lippo, the potter's mark Bo below the handle, height: 4 7/8in., 12.5cm. Provenance: W.A. Beare Collection. A similar pill jar with a different drug label is illustrated in Rudolf E.A. Drey 'Apothecary Jars', (London 1978) p.34, pl.6c.The coat of arms on this jar suggests that it was commissioned for a ducal or princely pharmacy. SOLD
