Italian Montelupo maiolica dish, c. 1500, decorated with a central chequered medallion within concentric bands, the border with interwoven angular ribbons in the chevron pattern interspersed with stylised foliage and further concentric bands, diameter: 14 1/2in., 37cm; condition: broken in three pieces and neatly re-stuck, fritting to edges. Provenance: From the collection of Sir Henry D'Avigdor-Goldsmid, Bt. DSO, MC, TD, of Somerhill Kent and thence by descent. Sold at Sotheby's 24 June 1981 and then at Christie's 22 April 2008, lot 6. A similar plate is illustrated in Thornton & Wilson, 'Italian Renaissance Ceramics: A Catalogue of the British Museum', Vol. I., pp. 204-5, pl. 129. The chequerboard pattern on this types of dishes was later copied by tiles and dishes made in the Low Countries during the 17th century. SOLD
