Small Italian Castelli plate, c. 1700, painted in the workshop of Carlo Antonio Grue, decorated with two conversing ladies, one standing beside a square pillar on which she rests her basket, the other seated on a grassy tussock, the border with reclining putti, foliage, fruit and masks in scrolling cartouches, diameter: 6 3/4in., 17.1cm; condition: good. Two Castelli plates with similar borders are illustrated in Wilson, Timothy, 'Italian Maiolica in Europe' (Ashmolean Museum Oxford, 2017), p. 325, pl. 161. SOLD
