Chinese grisaille 'European Subject' bowl, Qianlong (1736-95) c.1750, with foliate rim, decorated in the centre with a courting lady and gallant in European dress seated beneath a tree, with another amorous couple visible through the thicket, the inner rim with Dutch over-painted sprays of flowers and fruiting branches. Two hairlines with associated chips to rim, fritting to rim, star-crack to base
Notes:
The design for this bowl is thought to be based on an engraving by Jean-Baptiste Pater (1695-1736), perhaps a preparatory work for 'L'Amour et le Badinage'.
